Crack Branch

Past about a third of the Rayleigh wave speed a crack cannot go faster, so it splits instead — mirror, mist and hackle, and a branching pattern that points back at the flaw it started from; the plate is whole at the instant of the hit and the tree is across it a quarter-second later.
